Hair Toppers and Wigs in North York: Who They Suit and How They Are Fitted
Hair toppers and wigs are not just costume pieces — for many clients, they are a practical solution to thinning hair, hair loss from medical treatment, or conditions like alopecia. At Calia Hair, we work with clients who need a real hairpiece that looks natural and fits well. This post explains who benefits from a hair topper or wig, how they differ, and what a fitting appointment involves.
Who Hair Toppers and Wigs Are For
Hair toppers and wigs are appropriate for a wide range of clients:
Clients with thinning hair or hair lossMany clients experience progressive thinning as they age, particularly at the crown or part line. A hair topper can cover the area of concern while blending with the client's existing hair.
Clients with alopeciaAlopecia areata and other forms of alopecia can cause patchy or widespread hair loss. A wig or topper provides coverage and the appearance of a full head of hair.
Clients undergoing or recovering from medical treatmentChemotherapy and some other medical treatments cause temporary or permanent hair loss. Wigs provide full coverage during treatment and recovery. If you are experiencing sudden or significant hair loss and are not sure of the cause, speaking with your doctor before booking is advisable — understanding the underlying reason for the hair loss affects what type of solution will work best.
Clients who want more volume or lengthSome clients with very fine hair use a topper to add volume at the root or length where their own hair falls short.
Hair Toppers vs Wigs: What Is the Difference
Hair toppers (also called wiglets or top pieces) are partial hairpieces that cover a specific area of the head — usually the crown, part line, or top section. They clip or attach to the existing hair and blend with it. Toppers are for clients who still have hair on the sides and back but want coverage or volume at the top.
Wigs cover the full head and sit on the scalp. They are appropriate for clients who have lost most or all of their hair, or who prefer full coverage for other reasons. Wigs are available in synthetic fibre or human hair, with a range of cap constructions that affect how natural the hairline looks and how the wig feels to wear.
Human Hair vs Synthetic
Human hair wigs and toppers look and feel more natural and can be styled with heat in the same way as regular hair — blow-dried, flat ironed, or curled. They last longer with proper care. They are more expensive than synthetic options.
Synthetic wigs and toppers are more affordable and often hold their style without any styling required. They cannot be heat-styled (standard synthetic fibres will melt or frizz with heat), though some heat-resistant synthetic options are available. They are a good starting point for clients who want to try a hairpiece without a large initial investment.
What a Fitting Appointment Involves
A fitting appointment at Calia Hair involves:
A consultation to understand your needs, how much of your natural hair remains, and what look you are trying to achieve
Head measurement to determine the right cap size
Trying on options to assess colour match, density, and fit
Discussion of how to attach the piece securely and how to care for it
If you are coming in for a wig fitting during a period of hair loss from medical treatment, you are welcome to bring a support person. We want the appointment to feel comfortable.
Colour Matching
Getting the colour right is important for a natural result. If you are keeping some of your natural hair (as with a topper), we will match the hairpiece to your existing colour as closely as possible. We can also cut and blend the hairpiece to suit your face shape and the way your natural hair falls.
