Can You Get a Keratin Treatment on Coloured or Bleached Hair?
One of the most common questions we hear about keratin treatments is whether they are safe on coloured or bleached hair. The short answer is yes — but the condition of the hair matters more than whether it has been coloured. This post explains what to consider before booking.
Keratin and Colour: The Basics
A keratin treatment works by infusing a smoothing formula into the hair shaft and sealing it with heat. It does not involve any chemical process that strips pigment, so it is generally compatible with coloured hair.
The relevant question is not simply "is my hair coloured?" — it is "what condition is my hair in?" Colour-treated hair that is in good condition handles a keratin treatment well. Hair that is significantly damaged from repeated bleaching or overlapping chemical services needs to be assessed differently.
Coloured Hair (Single Process or Balayage)
If your hair has been coloured with a single process colour, tinted, or has a balayage or highlights, a keratin treatment is generally suitable, provided the hair is in reasonable condition.
One thing to be aware of: keratin treatments can slightly shift colour tone. The heat from the flat iron can affect how a colour sits on the hair, and some formulas interact with the pigment. If you have recently had colour applied, discuss timing with your stylist before booking a keratin treatment. As a general rule, it is better to colour first, allow a few days, and then have the keratin treatment — rather than the other way around.
Bleached or Highly Lifted Hair
Hair that has been bleached or significantly lifted is more porous than unprocessed or lightly coloured hair. More porous hair absorbs the keratin formula differently and can produce a different result.
In many cases, a keratin treatment is still a good option for bleached hair — it can help improve manageability and reduce frizz, which are common concerns for clients whose hair has been lightened significantly. However, the hair's condition needs to be assessed before the appointment.
If the hair is very damaged — broken, overly porous, or with significant structural compromise — a keratin treatment may not be appropriate. In those cases, the priority is rebuilding the hair's health before adding another chemical process. A consultation before booking is the right step.
If the hair is bleached but in good condition (well-maintained, regularly conditioned, with no significant breakage), a keratin treatment is usually fine. Your stylist will assess this at the consultation.
What About Damage?
The keratin treatment process involves heat from a flat iron set at a high temperature. Hair that is already compromised from chemical damage is more vulnerable to additional heat stress. This is why condition matters more than colour history.
Signs that hair may not be ready for a keratin treatment:
Significant breakage or snapping when stretched gently
Very high porosity (hair feels rough or spongy when wet and dries very quickly)
Active breakage or a cottonball-like texture at the ends
If any of these apply, speak to your stylist before booking. A treatment plan to address the underlying damage first is usually the better path.
Combining Keratin with a Colour Appointment
Many clients have both colour and a keratin treatment as part of their regular routine. The typical approach is:
Colour or highlights are applied and processed
After the colour appointment, the hair is allowed to settle for a few days
The keratin treatment is then applied at a separate appointment
This order means the colour is locked in by the keratin treatment rather than being disrupted by it. Some formulas also help the colour look more vibrant and dimensional when applied over freshly coloured hair.
If you want to do both, discuss the timing and sequence with your stylist at a consultation. We can look at your hair and current colour and advise on the best approach.
